EAD and EAC-CPF Implementation at the University of Florida

EAC-CPF Implementation at the University of Florida

In 2009-2010, Dina Benson, coordinator for the UF Institutional Repository, and John Nemmers received internal funding to complete the University of Florida Institutional History Project. The goal of this project was to investigate the effectiveness of using Encoded Archival Context - Corporate Bodies, Persons and Families (EAC-CPF) to encode historical information about UF's colleges, departments, and administrative units. The team created EAC-CPF XML records for various UF units and Nemmers created a stylesheet to produce HTML versions of the records. For example:

To test EAC-CPF records for individuals, Nemmers also created a record for David Levy Yulee:

UF also is a contributing institution to the Social Networks and Archival Context program (SNAC). For example, see the record for Yulee available via SNAC:

EAD Implementation at the University of Florida

UF has used the Encoded Archival Description standard (EAD) to encode archival finding aids since the release of version 1 in 1998. Currently, all finding aids are encoded in version 2002 and adhere to DACS standards. Data is maintained in Archivist's Toolkit, which is no longer supported so UF is investigating migration to another management system. EAD XML records are created for all finding aids. John Nemmers created a stylesheet to produce HTML versions of the XML records. For example:

UF also contributes all EAD finding aids to OCLC's ArchiveGrid.
