spacer THE DOVES PRESS: A TALE OF PROVENANCE

After the publication of Marianne Tidcombe's The Doves Press (London and New Castle, DE : British Library and Oak Knoll Press, 2002), the Rare Book collection was inventoried for titles published by the press. It was discovered that we have a complete holding of all the book and pamphlet titles by the press along with some ephemeral items and a couple by the Hammersmith Publishing Society. Also discovered were a large number of Doves Press invoices/receipts loosely inserted into the books. All were made out to a "Miss Baker". The Tidcombe book has a reference to Cordelia Baker on p. 212 in connection with the 1907 edition of Cobden-Sanderson's Credo. A little more searching led to a website at Washington University with a biographical notice on Cordelia Taylor Baker written by the Erin Davis, Curator of Rare Books. Miss Baker had studied binding with T. J. Cobden-Sanderson at the Doves Bindery. Written on the back of the shelf list cards for the Doves Press collection was "4-17-62 Argosy Acq." This was most likely a reference to the Argosy Book Store in New York. Hoping that there was a catalogue that described the collection, the book store was contacted. One of the Cohen sisters, either Judith, Naomi, or Adina, said that it was unlikely a catalogue had been produced. She thought it most likely that Stanley West, Director of the University of Florida Libraries, 1946-1966, whom she remembered well, had been contacted directly and he acquired the set on the spot.

The following bibliographic citations are taken as is from the online catalog. The first line is the call number, which may change, and the last line is the Tidcombe number. The books and pamphlets, 40 in all, are listed first, followed by ephemera and then the Hammersmith Publishing Society. If invoices/receipts accompanied a title, it is noted. At present, they are in envelopes shelved with the books. More than one title could appear on a invoice. Any other points of interest are also noted.
