Biographical/Historical Note

The majority of the photographs in this collection are noted to be by "Carter of Canada." Research has revealed that this photographer is likely William Webster (W. W.) Carter of Ontario, Canada. Some of his known photographs are structured very similarly to the ones in this collection, showing individuals and families standing or otherwise posed in front of their homes. Similar photographs can be seen in an exhibit by the St. Mary's Museum (St. Marys, Ontario).

William Carter was born in Norfolk, Ontario, Canada on August 21, 1869. He married Alberta ("Bertha") Mabel Isaac in 1902 with whom he had four children. The couple formed Carter and Isaac, a photography business based in St. Mary's, Ontario in the early twentieth century. William often traveled the countryside photographing people at their homes; Bertha assisted through finishing the photographs and handling orders. It is unknown how or why William Carter would have come to Alachua and Levy Counties in the 1880s, or what other parts of Florida he may have visited. He died on March 25, 1935 in Brantford, Ontario.

Scope and Content

The 51 photographs in this collection were taken in Florida's Alachua and Levy Counties in the 1890s and attributed to "Carter of Canada." They document families of varied socioeconomic standing in front of their homes. While some of the photographs seem to be taken on an elevated plane, most were taken from the street in front of the house. Families appear to be wearing their "Sunday best." The photographs are arranged numerically by the 5-digit number on the back of each image. Most of the photographs also include an "FHPC" number, which is the identifying number used for Florida History Photograph Collections at the University of Florida.

The following information was compiled concerning families identified in the captions for the photos.

Photograph 76130: "E. W. Way Family in Presbyterian Manse, corner of West Mechanic and North Pleasant Streets, Gainesville, Fla. 1898." E. W. Way served as the Presbyterian minister of Gainesville's First Presbyterian Church from 1896 to 1902.

Photograph 76129: "McKeever Family, Gainesville, Fla. 1898." Jefferson McKeever and his family, a local builder who co-owned McKeever and Stillians, which was located on Main Street opposite the courthouse, is depicted in front of his house with his tools.

Photograph 76126: "W. H. Robertson place about 1 mile West of Newnan's Lake, Alachua County, Fla. on McKinstry Homestead (ca. 1898)." Robertson was the publisher and proprietor of The New Era Newspaper (1865-1874).

Photograph 76125: "E. J. Baird home on S. Roper Street (Mrs. Baird in yard) Gainesville, Fla. (ca. 1898)." Emmett Baird, president of Standard Crate Company and owner of the Baird Opera House, came to Gainesville in 1890 and purchased the house in 1900. Emmett, and his brother, Eberle, also established Baird Hardware as well as several saw mills in the area.

Photograph 76078: "The Clarence O'Neill home on East Main Street North, Gainesville, Alachua County, Fla. (ca. 1890)." Clarence O'Neill, son of Edmond O'Neill, was a city director of finance. His father owned a local grocery store.
