Cesar Romero was a Hollywood film star, actor, dancer, thespian, and grandson of Cuban poet, revolutionary, and independence fighter José Martí. Romero performed on stage, in various films, and in several well-known television programs. He was born in New York City in 1907 to Cuban parents, Cesar Julio Romero Sr., a machinery exporter, and singer María Mantilla. Romero, and made his way from the silver screen into television. His most successful and memorable role on television was his recurring role as the Joker on the series Batman (1966). Romero died at 86 years of age in 1994.

Scope and Content

The collection includes the filmed interview that Rodríguez conducted with Romero in the 1990s and a news clipping with his obituary. El Show de Paul Rodriguez was the first nationally aired, bilingual talk and sketch-comedy show, produced by Univision from 1990 to 1994. The show was hosted by established Mexican-American comedian Paul Rodríguez. Both sketches and interviews, spoken alternatingly between English and Spanish, were translated to the audience depending on the guest. During the interview, Romero and Rodríguez discussed his career as an actor and the relationship of his mother María Mantilla de Romero with her supposed father José Martí. They discussed Mantilla's birth in relation to Martí's exile, his education of Mantilla, Martí's shackles, and the letters that he sent to Mantilla, which she donated to the Cuban Government in 1953.
