Biographical/Historical Note

Gordon E. Bigelow (1919-2008) was born in Springfield, MA. He attended the University of Florida from 1937-38 and again from 1939-1941. Bigelow's studies were interrupted by his service in the Army Air Corps during WWII as a B-26 bomber pilot in the European Theater. He flew a total of 44 missions. He attended Johns Hopkins University where he received an M.A. in 1947 and a Ph.D. in 1950. Upon receiving his Ph.D. from Johns Hopkins, Bigelow taught American Literature for 30 years at the University of Florida. He was awarded a Fulbright grant in 1961, where he lectured in American Literature at the University of Vienna from 1961-62. Bigelow died in Gainesville, FL on February 23, 2008.

Scope and Content

This collection consists of biographical information (e.g. curriculum vitae, lists of publications, documentation concerning the Fulbright in Vienna), a number of articles and essays, most undated, and correspondence and reviews of Bigelow's edited volume of Marjorie Kinnan Rawlings's correspondence, Selected Letters of Marjorie Kinnan Rawlings, with Laura V. Monti, 1983.
