Segment 1

Title:  [Hurricane Safe Buildings]

Various views of hurricane winds and damage are shown and the inability of buildings to withstand high winds is discussed.  The best way to be safe if a hurricane strikes is to leave the area but this can be difficult as the National Weather Service can provide only a twelve hour warning.  An evaluation of houses in the Florida Keys showed that few could withstand a major hurricane.  Chris Jones suggests this result is true in any Florida community.

The Bureau of Economic and Business Research (BEBR) and the Public Research Center of the Business Administration College have worked out a formula for fairness so that users pay only for the utilities they use.  Scenes of Matherly Hall exterior and classroom scenes and students are shown.  The dean of the college is interviewed briefly.  He mentions the consulting work, which can be done by their faculty to benefit the state.

This is a promotional and informational report about the University of Florida Law College.  Mention is made of the College of Law being the first to computerize their law library.  The newly completed Bruton-Geer Hall is shown and an explanation is given as to how it was funded.  An unidentified man talks about how the College of Law will educate the next generation of state leaders who will grapple with the problems, which will result as the state grows.

The recent Job Expo at the University of Florida is shown with students and recruiters.  Apparently the one this year is much more successful than last years and the success is attributed to the growing reputation of the University of Florida.  Brief interviews of the students are shown.

A profile is done of a forensic artist who does reconstructions of the faces of those who have died using their skeletons.  She is an advisor to the TV show “Quincy” and also was an advisor for the movie “Gorky Park”.  Recently she worked with a team who solved the problem of identifying the real remains of Pizarro.

This is both a promotion and profile of the College of Liberal Arts and Science at the University of Florida.  CLAS students are the largest of the academic groups at UF and the scope of their research is larger still in astronomy and other areas.  Scenes include the exterior of Turlington Hall, students, and lab classes.

The three men working on Gator Growl for this year are shown and profiled.  Reggie Garcia is the head of Gator Growl.  He states that 1200 students are helping to put on Gator Growl this year.  Robert Shimberg is the general chair and he has been working for eight months (since last March).  Jeff Sandler is the producer and was finally able to get Bill Cosby as the entertainer.

The College of Engineering at UF is creating a revolution in high technology.  Dr. Wayne Chen, the Dean of the college is briefly interviewed.  He states that the UF College of Engineering is one of the top fifteen out of 250 schools in the U.S.  Various inventions and research efforts are mentioned.

A woman who is an expert in economy is interviewed and answers questions regarding the growth of Florida’s economy.  She mentions that although there is a strong economy there will be a slowing in the construction area at the start of 1985.  Other factors as the citrus industry are discussed.
