A feature about the donation Brady Johnston made to the Florida State Museum of gold and silver plated Parker Brothers shot guns.  Dr. Wayne King, the director of the FSM, speaks briefly.  The guns will be on display in a security case in the lobby of the museum.

Title:  [Monarch Butterflies]

Monarch butterflies (possibly over 200,000,000) migrate in the winter to a secluded valley in the Mexican state of Michoacan.  The location of the valley is kept secret to protect the butterflies.  Mexico does not protect the butterflies’ habitat and therefore in time logging might have an impact on the butterflies.

The Florida Legislature has responded to the growing interest in solar energy by passing some alternative energy legislation.  Local governments will be forbidden to hamper the installation of solar collectors.  A brief view is shown of the Gainesville Airport and the solar panels on the roof.

Title:  [ROTC – Little General Linda Van Liew]

Linda Van Liew, a member of the ROTC honorary auxiliary Angel Flight, was named the national leader with the title “Little General”.  She is now the official representative and protocol officer for the Air Force Association, AFROTC, and Angel Flight.

Dr. Walter Auffenberg, curator of reptiles at the Florida State Museum, and graduate student Kent Vliet have been studying the courtship behaviors of alligators.  At the St. Augustine Alligator Farm they get in the water with the large reptiles and observe and photograph the various movements of the creatures so that they can identify and quantify them.

An intensive study of exercise is being studied at the Center for Physical and Motor Studies.  The Center’s director, Dr. Owen Holyoak will use computers to integrate the results of earlier studies with the current ones to develop a health profile.  A similar report can be seen in Tape 41, Segment 2.

Lincoln Brower is shown walking along a path near the location of the monarch butterflies in Minoacan.  He is later shown in his lab at the University of Florida.  Mention is made of the presentation of this news story on ABC’s News Magazine 20/20 by Roger Caras.

A prolonged drought in 1981 along with the increasing influx of people into Florida (over 6,000 a week) is causing a water problem.  Dr. Daniel Spangler expresses his concern and says that the aquifer (from where the water is pumped) can eventually compact if it dries out and that this can cause a collapse (a sinkhole).
