A report on the research of Dr. Elizabeth Wing, a curator at the Florida State Museum.  The research is funded by a grant from the National Science Foundation (NSF).  The scientific photographer, Donna Drake, takes photos of the 3,000 specimens, which Dr. Wing has in her extensive collection of fish bones.  The method used is called the photographic indexing method which will aid in conserving the collection.

Dr. Helga Kraft, a professor in the Dept. of Germanic and Slavic Languages, has introduced a method of teaching language, which was based on a method of teaching languages to Peace Corps volunteers back in the sixties.  The students only speak the foreign language (in this case German) from the very first day of class.  Dr. Otto Johnston, the department chair, states that it is a very practical approach to teaching languages.

Dr. Genevieve Ressler, a nuclear engineer, is studying cancer through the use of a process of nuclear activation analysis whereby animal tissue is bombarded with neutrons and then the trace elements are bombarded.  Eventually it is hoped that a single sample (as a blood specimen) could be used to detect the presence of cancer.

This is a profile of two former University of Florida football players, Jimmy Kynes and Keith Tribble.  Both discuss the benefits of the athletic program on them.

Title:  [Dr. Donald M. Sheppard]

Dr. Sheppard, a coastal engineer at the University of Florida, is interviewed by an unidentified man.  He is asked many questions relating to the impact a drilling platform and the drilling for oil off the coast of Sanibel Island might have on the environment.  Dr. Sheppard thinks that there could be problems but that the risks are minimal because of the precautions which the oil companies have taken.

A report on the O’Connell Center, which cost fourteen million dollars.  The Olympic sized swimming pool was recently inaugurated by a swim meet with UF swamping Alabama.  The versatility of the building is mentioned by Jim Dalrymple, director of Student Activities.  This segment is similar to the one on Tape 10, Segment 3.

What we know about early Indian culture comes from archaeological digs.  Dr. George MacDonald of Ottawa has developed a method of excavation of sites which allows for the recovery of samples which lie below the water level.  Dr. Barbara Purdy, who is working at the site, speaks briefly about the benefits of the new method.

Don Fuqua speaks at a two-day robotics conference at the University of Florida.  Fuqua expresses his concerns about the budget cutting proposals of President Reagan to the areas of solar and biomass research in Florida.  He states that the cutbacks are arbitrary and suggests that there needs to be a focus on alternative energy sources so that we can become less dependent on oil.

Dr. Arthur C. Allen is the founder of the Allen Museum which is involved in lapidoptera (butterfly) research.  Dr. Lee Miller is the curator at the museum.  Dr. Allen’s collection includes 850,000 specimens of butterflies.  The museum (which cost three million dollars) includes new equipment and resources.  Currently the museum is located in Sarasota but after Dr. Allen’s death the collection will move to the University of Florida.
