Biographical/Historical Note

Elmer J. Emig (1898-1956) was the head of the Journalism Department from 1929 to 1949. He received his B.A. at Canterbury College and his M.A. from the University of Wisconsin. He taught journalism at Baker University before coming here in 1927. In addition to his faculty work, Emig wrote editorials for Florida newspapers including the Florida Times-Union. He was a member of Sigma Delta Chi, the professional journalism fraternity and helped organize the University of Florida chapter.

Scope and Content

His papers include lecture and research notes, a small amount of correspondence, and manuscripts. Of special interest are his research notes on the history of Florida journalism. Included in his lecture notes are two surveys done by his Public Opinion students on reading, listening, and viewing habits of Gainesville residents. Part of his Mass Communication 505 notes appear to be a transcript of classroom discussion.

Also included is the "World's Week", an editorial review of world events which he wrote in the years prior to World War II, radio broadcast transcripts, and a history of the Florida chapter of Sigma Delta Chi.
