Biographical/Historical Note

BACCHUS, which stands for "Boost Alcohol Consciousness Concerning the Health of University Students," was founded at the University of Florida in 1976 by Dr. Gerardo M. Gonzalez. Dr. Gonzalez founded BACCHUS as part of the University of Florida's Campus Alcohol Information Center and was the Director of BACCHUS from its inception until his resignation from BACCHUS in 1986. BACCHUS is a peer-education program in which students educate other students about the effects of alcohol. Its goal is to educate students about the responsibilities of drinking alcohol and to put their education about these responsibilities into practice. BACCHUS has chapters on college campuses across the country; as of 1984, there were over 200 chapters in 44 states.

BACCHUS' administrative support came from the University of Florida and from the Florida Department of Health and Rehabilitative Services. BACCHUS' three major sponsors were the Education Commission of States, the National Football League, and the Distilled Spirits Council of the United States. Other supporters included Phillip Morris Foundation on behalf of the Miller Brewing Company, the Sigma Alpha Epsilon national fraternity, the Heublein Foundation, and the Distillers Company, Ltd.

In 1980, BACCHUS incorporated as BACCHUS of the United States, Inc. It became a 501(c)3 organization in 1981. After incorporation, BACCHUS was governed by a Board of Trustees and a national advisory council chaired by Otis R. Bowen, M.D., former governor of Indiana.

In 1985, a new peer-education organization, GAMMA (Greeks Advocating Mature Management of Alcohol) began and spread through Greek organizations on many college campuses in conjunction with BACCHUS. In the 1990s, BACCHUS and GAMMA's name was changed to The BACCHUS and GAMMA Peer Education Network to reflect their close relationship. As the new organization approached its 30th anniversary, its long name was brought up at a Board of Trustees meeting. It was agreed that the name was too complex and needed streamlining. After a great deal of discussion, the Board of Trustees instructed the organization to change its name to The BACCHUS Network, effective July 1, 2005. In January 2014, The BACCHUS Network merged with NASPA-Student Affairs Administrators in Higher Education and was renamed The BACCHUS Initiatives of NASPA. More information on the current history of The BACCHUS Initiatives of NASPA can be found on their website.
