Biographical/Historical Note

Homer Edwin Still, Jr. was a student at the University of Florida from 1939-1942. He received a Bachelor of Science in Business Administration with high honors from the University of Florida during the Commencement exercises held Sunday and Monday, May 24 and 25, 1942. As a student he was actively involved in different service, honorary, and other organizations during his four years at UF. He was a member of Beta Alpha Psi (an honorary and professional accounting fraternity), Phi Eta Sigma (A freshman honorary fraternity, the Cavaliers (a dance society), and Scabbard and Blade (a military organization). Likewise he held offices in several organizations. He was President of the sophomore class (1939-1940), second Vice-President (1940) and President (1941) of Alpha Phi Omega (a national service fraternity), Vice-President (1942) of Beta Gamma Sigma (an honorary fraternity in the College of Business), President (1942) of Florida Blue Key, and General Chairman (1942) of the annual Military Ball. In 1942 he was chosen to be in the Hall of Fame, Who's Who, and he was invited into the Phi Kappa Phi scholastic honorary society.

Still was a member of the Slippery Seven while at the University of Florida. Other members included campus leaders George Avant, Donald Everette, Edward Lang, Harold Neff, William Norman, and Ralph Turlington. No background information could be discovered about the Slippery Seven. However, the name does appear in the Seminole yearbook in the list of University of Florida organizations in which each of these men was active.

Scope and Content

The collection is comprised of certificates, printed materials, photographs, programs, pamphlets, and artifacts. The latter consist of a rat cap, two programs from the 1942 Military Ball, a small doll dressed as a football player, and a ROTC white uniform and cap typically worn at the Military Ball and other social functions. The items are disparate but all relate to the activities in which Homer Still, Jr. was involved when he was a student. The fact that he saved them indicates that they were meaningful to him and they provide both a text and visual historical record of this time period at the University of Florida.
